2003/04

Netherfield established themselves as one of the Notts Amateur Leagues leading sides with a proud season that saw the club reach the Quarter Finals of the Nottinghamshire FA Intermediate Section Cup, the semi finals of the Senior League Cup, and third place behind Shooters and Vernon Villa in the Premier Division.

After a tough and disappointing pre-season Albion got their campaign off to a flyer with a win and a clean sheet against newly promoted United FC. Netherfield's side including two new summer transfers, former Culimore & Racing Club Vasco centre half Matt Cooper, and midfielder Vinny Toulson who had spells at Retford Town and Radford. By the end of October Netherfield were comfortably sitting in the top six, but the clubs season was to take a massive blow when first, Midfield Anchor man Mark Buckjley sustained an injury which saw him out for the season in the 1-0 win at Burton Joyce and then star playmaker Richard Brodsky was sentenced to twelve months behind bars for possession of drugs. The capture of former player Matt Brazener came at an ideal time, the midfielder was drafted into the midfield position and performed well holding in front f the back four. Wins against Limekiln (in both County Cup's and the League) and Ruddington Village gave the club hope as they faced the title contenders Vernon Villa for the second time. The first time in an amazing game at the sunblest Rec, Albion came back from 3-0 down but lost to a late goal with Villa down to nine men. The match at Vernon Park was a close affair and with the score at 1-1 the home side were awarded a penalty deep in added time which was converted to Albion's disappointment again. Heads were picked up as the club marched onto the fourth round of the County Cup, after an impressive 2-1 win over Thoresby CW Res.

The new year started with a bang for Albion, a thumping 8-3 loss to leaders Shooters and a defeat to Burton Joyce at the end of the month was eased slightly as the club won their second round match in the league cup against Ruddington. A Steven Brodsky inspired performance was the difference on a cold blustery day. Netherfield won three out of their next four league matches but were knocked out of the County Cup to a worthy BTSC side. The league cup semi final against Shooters was a keenly fought contest, with Albion behind by the odd goal in seven Manager Shaun Pates pushed keeper Dave James up for a corner with seconds remaining, Albion's fight was to end when Shooters cleared and counter-attacked the set play to cement their place in the final. 5-3, Netherfield went out, but third place in the league was still to play for. Sitting in fourth but rapidly catching Monty Hind above them, the two sides met at the Rectory in a midweek game that would almost guarantee who finishes best place. Albion overcame previous defeats by their rivals to win their first game under Pates against them, leading to three more wins and a draw, which gave Albion that third placed spot.
