1998/99

With the top five moving on, Netherfield fancied their chances in the 1998/99 season, Although massive changes were made during the summer at the club, the sides pre-season form suggested that they would be again fighting in the top half of the table come April and May. Out went Roberts (to league rivals AK Construction), his strike partner Rawson and Players Player of the year Matt Brazener, but in came giant striker John Burnett (pictured), young goalkeeper Phil Rippon, tricky winger Phil Schofield, the hard working Ben Rowson, Martin Dyce, Nick & Martin Rea. Netherfield looked a different team, and this was highlighted in an opening day 4-0 win against new boys Hillfield, on a day where Netherfield were superb.

Seven days later they took on Beechdale Villa and after winning a bad tempered game 4-3, it became plain to see that Albion’s opponents wouldn’t last the season, and were thrown out of the league some weeks after.

Netherfield also received a huge loss on the pitch, when the Rea brothers and Dyce all decided to leave before October. Netherfield’s form was indifferent during 1997 and with Midfielder Kevin Camplin also deciding to part company with the club, the side recorded five straight defeats in November and December, leaving them out of the title race, and more worried about the sides below them.

That was to change though on the 2nd of January 1999 and the arrival of two players by the name of Brodsky, one was to only appear once (but he would be involved with the club in later years), and another, was to be an absolute revelation for the side.

After table beating proppers Dale Farm A 9-0. Steven Brodsky (pictured) was to come off the bench a week later whilst drawing 2-2 with Culimore, to help his new team-mates by scoring and setting two up to record a 5-2 win. A week later he bettered that by scoring both in a 2-1 victory at Basford, and further inspired performances helped the club to winning 8-0 at Hillfield, 9-2 at home against Wollaton, 11-1 against AFC Acadamy (Andy Merrin scoring a record six goals in that game), another 8-0 against Great Northern and an Albion record 14-0 league victory against Dale Farm A (Brodsky grabbing four, one a solo effort run from the half way line, whilst playing sweeper). All these convincing wins though would not affect the title race, as top of the table Top Valley were to win every one of their 28 games to storm the Championship.

Slip ups (Top Valley aside) to Crookes Healthcare, AK Construction and a last day loss at AKFC were Netherfield’s only defeats since Brodsky signed for the club, and with Merrin grabbing 31 goals from his 17 league starts the pair quite rightly shared the Players vote for Player of the year. If they had both appeared for Albion all year it might have been a top three finish rather then a top five, but Manager Shaun pates had enough faith in his side after some mightily impressive performances, to take them into the Leagues Third Division the next season.
