ALL CHANGE AFTER THE WAR
It was 1949 when Arthur Nutt was
appearing for Netherfield Albion, still alive today his two spells
at the club was only interrupted by the war. Appearing for the same
team name in which brother Tommy had already previously won the
Notts Alliance Cup in 1936. The scorer that day was Arnold Holland,
match winner in Albion's greatest ever achievement. The 49/50 season
concluded to a similar outcome, but for Gedling CW, a side that Nutt
went on to play for and enjoy great success from 1953 onwards, who
ended any hopes of silverware with a crushing 3-0 win in the same
final at Basford United's Mill Street ground.
Gedling CW are since long gone, as
are many of the sides that appeared in the top division of local
amateur football in those days, Basford United and Boots Athletic
(all be it their thirds) the only sides left with us still plying
their trade in the Alliance's top flight.
Below is a few bits of memorabilia
supplied by Arthur after a recent column in the local Evening Post
celebrating our 75th anniversary as a football club.

Above is the cover of one of the
clubs fixture booklets given to the players at the start of their
league campaign, this one is from the 1952/53 season.

Above, the 1951/52 sides list of
members, note 12 vice presidents and 11 separate committee members.
The honoury Treasurer at the time, Sammy Harrison was rumoured to
have been knighted for service after around half a century with the
club in various capacities.

Above results and fixtures from the
1949/50 season's opening half, unfortunately the other page was torn
and we don't have archives for full results during that campaign.
Note appearances in the FA Amateur Cup and a two-nil defeat at the
hands of Penrith.

The three page booklets offered
full league fixture coverage for the players and members, this one,
from the 1950/51 season has a few results scribbled in.

Note the opposition faced in
1952/53, teams such as Heanor Town, Blackwell MW, Bilsthorpe CW,
Boots Athletic Bestwood Colliery (as they were then known) and
Basford United are very much a part of non league football today,
the others, sadly, do no longer exist.

A picture from the 1947 season
shows Netherfield posing in green and gold at their now no longer
ground at Concrete Road, the side is from the following: back row,
left to right: Johnny Williams (trainer), Jackie Harper, E. Henson,
Jackie Bell, Fred Widdowson, Dennis Bidolph, Eric Nicholson, Ernie
Allsopp (Secretary). Front row: Arthur Nutt, Charlie Saxton, Des
Hickman, Kenny Lamb, unknown, G. Salvin.
We also have two photo's of Gedling
CW lining up in the fifties, anyone wishing for information on them
and anyone willing to contribute with anything extra can email us

Thanks to Arthur Nutt (pictured) for the above
information and merchandise.
